It takes quite a young photographer to trust their intuition and stick with it through all of their work and to then have people and clients turn to trust them with their aesthetic and values inside an image. An example of this sort of dedication paying off is that of 29 year old New York based english photographer, Jody Rogac. Through all of her work you can find a beautifully similar thread, an organic reaction to her models and landscapes. An idea I think is currently most relative and sought after. Jody’s work has already been published in I-D, Monocle, NY Times Magazine, Rolling Stone and PIG Magazine.
C’est sans doute la frondeur de la jeunesse qui fait suivre à un jeune photographe son intuition pour ne jamais la lâcher et parfois se retrouver finalement avec un nombre d’admirateurs et de clients lui faisant confiance, à lui et à son esthétique de l’image. C’est le cas de la photographe anglaise Jody Rogac, 29 ans et aujourd’hui résidente new-yorkaise. De tout son travail émane une beauté et un sentiment ultra-organique et vivant qu’elle capture autant dans ses modèles que dans son environnement. Le travail de Jody a entre autres déjà été publié dans I-D, Monocle, NY Times Magazine, Rolling Stone et PIG Magazine.

I was born in England, grew up in Vancouver Canada, and now I live in New York.I was always very interested in making art and when I discovered photography and really enjoyed it, I felt like I had found my medium. I admire the work of Diane Arbus, Katy Grannan, Irving Penn to name a few. I wouldn’t call myself a fashion driven photographer. I’m mostly inspired by the subjects I’m photographing and the people and places around me. In regards to my fashion work, I always try to find a balance between working with my given model and environment, and being mindful of the clothing. Because at the end of the day, a fashion shoot does need to display the clothes. What keeps me motivated is working to bring my fashion photography to a place that is personal to me. When this is allowed to happen I think a successful fashion story can be made.
Je suis née en Angleterre, j’ai grandi à Vancouver au Canada et maintenant je vis à New York. J’ai toujours été très intéressée par l’art et quand j’ai découvert la photographie, j’ai su que j’avais trouvé mon médium. J’admire beaucoup le travail de Diane Arbus, Katy Grannan et Irving Penn pour n’en nommer que quelques uns. Je ne dirais pas que je suis nécessairement une photographe de mode. Je suis très inspirée par les sujets que je photographie, les gens et les endroits qui m’entourent. Au niveau de mon travail dans la mode, j’essaie toujours de trouver un équilibre entre travailler avec le mannequin et l’environnement tout en gardant toujours en tête les vêtements. Parce qu’a la fin, une série mode doit principalement rester concentrée sur les fringues. Ce qui continue à me motiver là-dedans, c’est de parvenir à amener mes photos de mode sur un terrain qui reste toujours personnel pour moi. Quand c’est possible, alors la série mode peut être très réussie.

 I feel that your photographs, wether they are taken in a studio or on location, have continue a strong style throughout, is there a preference to shooting inside to outside? Ton style photographique reste aussi fort et présent dans des séries en studio qu’en plein air. As-tu une préférence?
I don’t have a preference, I enjoy both equally and for different reasons. I like how a studio shoot is more controlled and contained, but I also enjoy a location shoot which is more spontaneous and surprising.I look for somewhere that has nice light, a good color palette (whether it be indoor or outdoor), and that feels comfortable. While I love to let things happen organically over the course of a sitting, I also love directing. Having a good team is also very important to me, and finding the people you love to work with comes with some trial and error. I love strange beauty, I love to cast models who have something a little “different” about them. And I also love to cast and photograph my friends!
Je n’ai pas de préférence, j’aime chacun des deux pour des raisons différentes. J’aime le fait qu’une séance photo en studio est plus contrôlée et moins éparpillée mais j’aime aussi faire une série en plein air, plus spontanée et naturelle. Je regarde toujours pour trouver des endroits avec une belle lumière et une bonne palette de couleurs (peu importe que ce soit à l’intérieur ou à l’extérieur), ca me rassure toujours. J’aime autant laisser les choses se dérouler naturellement que j’aime diriger. Avoir une bonne équipe est aussi très important pour moi et trouver les gens avec qui travailler convenablement vient souvent avec son lot d’erreurs. J’aime la beauté étrange, les mannequins qui ont quelque chose de différent mais j’aime aussi faire poser mes amis!

Film or Digital? What cameras do you like to work with? Digital ou films? Avec quels appareils travailles-tu?
Both! My favorite camera to work with is my Hasselblad. But I also love to shoot on my Nikon F3 and F100. And a 5D for more commercial work.
Les deux! Ma caméra préférée est la Hasselblad, mais j’aime aussi mon Nikon F3 et F100. Et j’utilise un 5D pour les travaux plus commerciaux.

How do you feel about the level of internet usage one must conduct in order to stay ‘present’ in the industry? Que penses-tu de l’usage du net aujourd’hui et du fait de devoir y être absolument pour pouvoir travailler dans la photo?
The internet is a great tool for keeping in touch and sharing work, but I also feel like it can get very overwhelming. I’m always on the internet, it would be impossible to run a business these days without it. But at the same time I don’t think I spend half the time on my computer as some people I know!
Internet est un très bon outil pour rester en contact et partager mon travail, mais j’ai souvent l’impression que ça devient étouffant. Je suis toujours sur le net, c’est impossible de travailler sans ça aujourd’hui. Mais bon, je connais des gens qui y passent deux fois plus de temps que moi!

Taking lots of pictures, and hopefully a bit of traveling!
