Née à Rome et résidant actuellement à Londres, la photographe Roberta Ridolfi capture des images rugueuses et vivantes. Chargé d’émotion, son travail semble autant une représentation de son sujet que d’elle même. Elle travaille actuellement pour de nombreuses marques et magazines parmi lesquels I-D, Appartamento, Rolling Stone Italie, MTV et Urban Outfitters pour n’en citer que quelques uns.
Roberta Ridolfi was born in Rome and currently lives and work in London. Her images are raw and beautiful, untouched and alive. Charged with emotion, her work is both a representation of her subject matter as much as herself. Creating works for the likes of I-D, Appartamento, Rolling Stone Italia, MTV and Urban Outfitters amongst others, Roberta has a strong signature style that is apparent throughout.

Your still images seem as if they are a direct reaction to something emotional for you in that moment, would you agree? Tes images semblent être une réaction directe a quelque chose qui te touche émotionnellement sur le moment. Es-tu d’accord avec cela?
That’ a nice explanation. I could never put it into words but that’s exactly what happens.
C’est une explication qui me plaît. Je n’aurais jamais pu mettre moi-même des mots dessus mais c’est exactement ça.

Do you have any mentors,teachers, other artists that have made a significant impact on you and your work? Y’a t-il des mentors, professeurs ou des autres artistes qui ont eu un impact sur toi et ton travail?
A lot of artists and people I met inspired me in my work but I think my youth and the things I liked growing up have had the biggest impact on what I do today.
Beaucoup d’artistes et de gens que j’ai rencontré ont inspiré mon travail mais je pense que ma jeunesse et les choses que j’ai appreciées en grandissant sont celles qui ont eu le plus d’impact sur ce que je fais aujourd’hui.

I really like all your chosen environments that each photo story is taken in. How do you go about location scouting for your shoots? J’aime beaucoup les endroits ou tes séries photos sont prises. Comment trouves-tu et choisis-tu ceux-ci?
For me it’s a lot about having a location that inspires me.My initial choice would be to photograph people in their own environment but that’s not possible all the time.I also love shooting in nature or places that could easily be from another time. I’m not a big fan of the modern world! Some of the places are places I’ve been to before and I remember them when a shoot comes about. It usually starts from an idea and it goes from there. Sometimes we just drive around and get lucky.
Pour moi, il s’agit juste de trouver un endroit inspirant. Mon choix initial serait de toujours photographier des gens dans leur propre environnement mais ce n’est pas possible. J’aime aussi prendre des photos dans la nature ou bien dans des endroits qu’on penserait sortis des temps anciens. Je ne suis pas très fan du monde moderne! Certains des endroits sont des endroits où j’ai déjà été auparavant et je m’en souviens quand un shoot se présente. Parfois, on conduit un peu et on a de la chance.

Where is your favorite place to travel to to take pictures? Quel est l’endroit où tu préfères voyager pour prendre des photos?
Anywhere where the sun is shining….Daylight makes things unpredictable. It can’t be replaced. I’ve also been spending a couple of months in New York for the past 3 years and that’s something I want to continue doing.
N’importe où avec du soleil…La lumière est irremplacable. Les trois dernières années, j’ai passé deux mois par an à New-York  et c’est quelque chose que je voudrais continuer à faire.

What is your process in terms of choosing models? How would you say you establish a relationship with your model and/or environment before you start shooting? Comment choisis-tu ton modèle et comment établis-tu la relation avec celui-ci avant le shooting?
I think I have a certain type of girl I love photographing so choosing the model is the first thing I do.I don’t work with professional models necessarily, now and again I stop people I see in the street or if there is someone I have seen that I like, I get in touch and see what happens. I always try to make people feel comfortable before we start shooting. I make them a cup of tea or espresso and we go from there.
Je pense qu’il y a un certain type de fille que j’aime prendre en photo donc choisir le mannequin est la première chose que je fais. Je ne travaille pas nécessairement avec des mannequins professionnels, parfois je stoppe des gens dans la rue ou bien si il y a quelqu’un que je trouve bien, je me mets en contact avec eux et je vois ce qui se passe. J’essaie toujours de mettre les gens à l’aise avant la séance. Je leur fais une tasse de thé ou un expresso et on part de là.

How do you balance client work and personal work? Comment gères-tu ton travail personnel et ton travail commissionné?
Personal work is what keeps me excited about photography. But obviously I look for client work all the time to be able to do my personal work and to survive.
Mon travail personnel est ce qui me fait poursuivre dans la voie de la photographie, mais de toute évidence j’ai besoin de trouver des clients tout le temps pour survivre et pouvoir continuer à faire ce que j’aime.

Do you have a process in which you work to ensure your images have a signature style of yours right the way through? Does this change with client work?  As-tu une manière de procéder pour garder ton style propre et ceci est-il facile à conserver pour tes travaux commissionnés?
I don’t really have a process.I wish there was one! What I try to express comes out naturally in the pictures, it’s something I don’t think about too much. It just happens.With commercial work it’s a different story.Especially when it’s a big client and there are a lot of other people involved. It can be very art directed. It’s like if your style gets a bit contaminated.
Je n’ai pas vraiment de procédé précis. J’aimerais bien qu’il y en aie un! Ce que j’essaie d’exprimer transparaît naturellement dans mes photos, c’est quelque chose auquel je ne pense pas vraiment. Ca se passe c’est tout. Avec mon travail commercial, c’est une autre histoire, particulièrement si c’est un gros client et qu’il y a beaucoup d’autres personnes inclues dans le projet. Ca peut être très dirigé artistiquement et ca contamine un peu ton style.

Any stand out jobs that you really loved? Y’a t-il un job que tu as particulièrement aimé?
Shooting in the waterfalls upstate new york last summer for Dossier journal. It was a beautiful day with great people.
Un shoot dans les cascades au nord de l’état de New-York l’été dernier pour Dossier Journal. C’etait une journée géniale avec des gens géniaux.

How important do you think the use of the internet is in today’s world? How often would you use it each working day? Que penses-tu d’Internet et de son usage aujourd’hui? L’utilises-tu beaucoup?
I overuse it and I wish I didn’t. When I’m away and I can’t check my emails for a few days  I’m much more productive and I notice things around me more.It’s definitely good in terms of showing your work around but there’s so much information that can be overwhelming. Sometime I wish we could go back to a pre-internet world….there was more wonder. Now everything is so accessible it loses its charm.
Je l’utilise de trop et je souhaiterais que ce ne soit pas le cas. Quand je suis à l’étranger et que je ne peux pas regarder mes emails pendant quelques jours, je suis beaucoup plus productive et je remarque plus les choses autour de moi. C’est très bien pour montrer ton travail mais il y a tellement d’informations que ça en devient épuisant aussi. Parfois, je souhaiterais retourner à une ère pré-internet… Il y avait plus de possibilités de s’émerveiller. Maintenant tout est tellement accessible que ca en perd tout son charme.

Any long term goals for your work? Anyone you haven’t yet worked with who you would love to? Quels sont tes plans à long terme et avec qui souhaiterais-tu travailler dans le futur?
I guess my main goals are to be able to do what I love doing and have fun, to make books and prints of my personal work and travel around for it. Would also be great to photograph Chan Marshall at her place.
Mes buts principaux sont de pouvoir faire ce que j’aime, faire des livres et des impressions de mon travail et voyager pour ca. Ca serait aussi très chouette de photographier Chan Marshall chez elle.

What is coming up for you this year that you are excited about? Quels sont tes projets?
I did a shoot for a big designer but it won’t be out until 2013 so not exactly this year. For the time being I’m looking forward to getting my hands on my uncle’s resurrected super 8 camera he got for his wedding in 1978.
Je viens de faire une série photo pour un grand designer mais ça ne sortira pas avant 2013. Pour le moment, je suis juste très impatiente d’avoir entre les mains la caméra super 8 que mon oncle a reçu à son mariage en 1978.
