How did you start working in photography? Comment as-tu commencé la photo?
I starting taking photos when I was 17. Like most teenagers I was just snapping half drunken pictures of my friends, but since then it’s become much more than that. It started very haphazardly, I have no formal training in photography, so I’m constantly experimenting and continuously learning new techniques. Believe it or not I was actually studying engineering. Photography is something I’ve more or less fell into.
J’ai commencé à prendre des photos quand j’avais 17 ans. Comme la plupart des adolescents, je prenais juste des photos de mes amis quand j’étais à moitié saoul, mais depuis c’est devenu bien plus que ça.  Ca a commencé un peu comme une coïncidence , je n’ai suivi aucune formation en photographie donc j’expérimente continuellement et j’apprends toujours de nouvelles techniques. A la base, j’étudiais pour devenir ingénieur. Je suis tombé dans la photo un peu par hasard.

What are your influences and which other photographers and artists do you admire? Quelles sont tes influences et qui sont les artistes et photographes que tu admires?
My greatest influence is my friends. There is a certain wild energy, grace (or lack there of), and drive for adventure that comes with being young that’s at the center of my work. Also the late cinematographer Nestor Almendros has had a huge impact on me. All of his work is great, I feel as if every scene he’s shot has a certain resonance to it.  Other artists that have influenced me include: Robert Mapplethorpe, Cy Twombly, Ryan McGinley, Richard Avedon, Ed Ruscha, Cass Bird, Nan Goldin, Marc Hundley, Larry Clark, Joel Sternfeld, Hemingway.
Ma plus grande influence est mes amis. Il y a cette sorte d’énergie sauvage, de grâce (ou un manque de celle-ci) et ce sens de l’aventure qui sont présents quand tu es jeune et qui sont au centre de ce que je fais. Le cinématographe Nestor Almendros a aussi eu un énorme impact sur moi. Tout son travail est génial et chacune des scènes qu’il a tourné résonne en moi. What attracts you as a subject and what are you trying to capture? Qu’est-ce qui t’attire et qu’essaies-tu de capturer dans tes photos?
I try not to over analyze my work. It’s something that has become almost instinctual. It could be a gesture, facial expression, anything really. I’m looking to capture those fleeting moments that would otherwise be forgotten, that beautiful balance of peculiar and familiar.
J’essaie de ne pas trop analyser ce que je fais. C’est quelque chose d’instinctif. Ca peut-être un geste, une expression dans le visage, n’importe quoi vraiment. J’essaie de capturer ces moments qui seraient vite oubliés sans ça, cet équilibre entre le familier et l’étrange.
