Originaire de Virginia Beach (Virginie), Othelo Gervacio est actuellement l’un des acteurs forts de la rafraîchissante scène artistique new-yorkaise.
Complètement autodidacte, ce touche à tout, ancien assistant du fameux tatoueur Scott Campbell (avec lequel il participa entre autres à l’élaboration d’une ligne exclusive de sacs « Scott Campbell » pour Vuitton avec Marc Jacobs) est aujourd’hui le nouveau directeur artistique de l’agence créative AllDayEveryday et un collaborateur attitré de la marque de bijoux BingBang. Bloggeur, skateur et artiste, son talent multiforme ne se départit pas d’un reste de colère adolescente et d’un sens de l’humour qui claque. Tout dernièrement AllDayEveryday a lancé le blog Milk Made, qui livre en direct via quelques intervenants bien choisis photos et news de la fashion week en cours actuellement à NY. Interview.
Coming from Virginia Beach, VA, Othelo Gervacio is currently a linchpin of the refreshing new art scene from New York City. Completely self made, the ex-assistant of famous tattoo artist Scott Campbell (whom he collaborated with on several projects including the creation of an exclusive line of bags for Vuitton with Marc Jacobs) is now the art director of the creative agency AllDayEveryday and a collaborator of the jewelry brand Bing Bang. Blogger, skater and artist, his multiform talent is still mixed with remainders of teenage anger and an abrasive sense of humor. As part of the New York fashion week,  AllDayEveryday just launched the Milk Made blog, which delivers with the help of selected stakeholders, pictures and news of the ongoing event. Interview.

OTHELO
I’m Othelo, with one ‘L’, not two like the other Othello’s you might know. I’m from the ex-sleepy town called Virginia Beach, now a gigantic tourist trap with bad night clubs, towering hotels, and no room for swimming.  It used to be the playground my pals and I ruled.  This is where it all began.  A lot of the time we hung out at this place called the Ghost Ship, a haunted house where some of us “worked”.  We were total shit heads. Not only did we skim money off the top, but would occasionally jump out at people wearing nothing but masks. When we weren’t doing that, you could probably catch us next door at the arcade, pool hopping from hotel to hotel, or pretending to work at the parking lot on the free fare days to get pizza money.  Other activities in my youth included going to mall to look at girls, writing on things, skating behind supermarkets, buying mix tapes, and lurking at the book store for hours looking at magazines – cause that’s the only way we could find out about cool shit going on elsewhere in the world. Ah yes, a time before blogs and wireless internet.
Je suis Othelo, avec un seul « L », pas comme les deux autres Othello que vous connaissez peut-être. Je viens de l’ex ville-fantôme Virginia Beach, qui est maintenant un gigantesque piège à touristes avec des sales clubs, des hôtels énormes et pas de place quand tu veux nager. C’était l’endroit où mes potes et moi nous amusions et c’est là que tout a commencé. On passait la plupart de notre temps dans cet endroit appelé « Le bateau-fantôme », une maison hantée où certains d’entre nous « travaillaient ». On était des crétins complets. On faisait des ricochets avec des pièces sur le toit et on sautait sur les gens en bas, habillés juste avec des masques. Quand on n’était pas occupés par ça, vous pouviez nous voir aux arcades, ou en train de passer d’une piscine d’hotel à l’autre ou en train de faire semblant de travailler dans un parking les jours de parking gratuit pour pouvoir se payer de la pizza. Les autres activités de ma jeunesse consistaient à aller au centre commercial mater les filles, écrire sur des trucs, faire du skate derrière les supermarchés, acheter des mixtapes et passer des heures à regarder les magazines dans les librairies – c’était la seule manière pour nous de voir les trucs cools qui se passaient dans le monde. Ah oui, c’était avant les blogs et l’internet sans fil.

INFLUENCES
- As a kid what did you want to become later?  Are you close from this kid dream now? Que voulais-tu devenir plus tard? Te sens-tu proche de ton rêve d’enfant maintenant?
I went to Disney World when I was like 7, I really wanted to be a cartoonist after that.  I’m not exactly drawing Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse on a daily basis, but I guess what I’m doing now still comes from the same creative place.
J’ai été à Disneyworld quand j’avais 7 ans, je voulais vraiment devenir dessinateur de BD après ça. Je ne dessine pas vraiment Donald Duck et Mickey Mouse régulièrement mais je suppose que ce que je fais maintenant vient de ça.

- What do you find inspiring? Qu’est-ce qui t’inspire?
Good music, friends, and surroundings.
La bonne musique, mes amis et ce qui m’entoure.

WORK
-    How did you get started? Why did you move to New York? Comment as-tu commencé ? Pourquoi avoir bougé à New York?
As soon as I graduated college (where I studied creative advertising), I skipped out on grad school and took a job with Scott Campbell. It was probably one of the best moves I’ve ever made.  I was pretty damn wet behind the ears when I first got here though. I met Karl Lagerfeld the first week I was in New York and had no idea who he was. Soon after we left his presence, I asked my friend, “who the fuck was that and why was he wearing white gloves ? “
Dès que j’ai été diplômé universitaire (où j’ai étudié la publicité créative), je suis parti et j’ai eu ce job avec Scott Campbell. C’est probablement une des meilleures décisions que j’ai pris. J’étais vraiment au courant de rien quand je suis arrivé ici pourtant. J’ai rencontré Karl Lagerfeld la première semaine où j’étais à New York et je n’avais aucune idée de qui il était. Peu après qu’il soit parti, j’ai demandé à mon ami «  Putain, qui est ce type et pourquoi portait-il des gants blancs? »

- You worked for  the tattoo artist Scott Campbell, what kind of projects were you involved in? Sur quels types de projets travaillais-tu aux côtés de Scott Campbell?
I was the right hand man, doing all the dirty work of course. Dumping bodies, collecting money, doing karate on people, etc.  I was mostly involved in the commercial art stuff – we had clients from Victoria’s Secret to Harley Davidson. From start to finish, I played many roles in each project. I also helped with the fine art projects quite a bit as well.
J’étais son bras droit, celui qui se tapait tout le sale boulot. Jeter les corps, ramasser l’argent, faire du karaté sur les gens etc. J’étais surtout investi dans le côté commercial de l’art. Nous avions des clients allant de Victoria’s Secret à Harley Davidson. Du début à la fin, j’ai joué plusieurs rôles dans chaque projet. J’ai aussi beaucoup aidé au niveau des projets artistiques eux-mêmes.

- You are now the art director of AllDayEveryDay, in which way is it different? Tu es maintenant directeur artistique chez AllDayEveryDay, en quoi est-ce différent?
Here it’s a little different.  There are no more tattoo machine’s buzzing in the backround, half naked people struttin’ around with their newly made tattoos, and Slayer blasting on the studio speakers. I guess now it’s more of “my job”.  It’s more responsibility, more of my ideas turning into real things, and more coffee needed during the day. We also have a water cooler where we talk shit about other co-workers.
C’est un peu différent ici. Il n’y a plus le bourdonnement de la machine de tatouage en bruit de fond, des gens à moitié nus dans la pièce avec leurs nouveaux tatouages et Slayer à fond dans la sono. Je suppose que c’est plus un « vrai job ». Avec des responsabilités, mes idées qui se transforment en vrais projets et plus de café pendant la journée. On a aussi un distributeur d’eau autour duquel on parle sur le dos des autres collègues.

- You also work in fashion (for BingBang Jewelry), isn’t this quite far from what seems to be your main interests (skate, etc. )? Tu travailles aussi dans la mode (BingBang), ce qui semble être assez éloigné de tes centres d’intérêt principaux (skate, etc. )?
Here, sometimes the world of fashion collides with the world of skating.  I feel like it’s not weird to see skate bros dating models nowadays or seeing them at fancy fashion parties.  Sometimes I even wonder how I get passed the door guy at these type of events.
The creative community in New York is pretty small, it kind of happens naturally. Most of the time, we’re just a bunch of friends trying to help each other out.
Le monde de la mode se mélange souvent à celui du skate, je ne trouve pas ça bizarre de voir des amis skaters avec des petites amies mannequins ou de les croiser dans des super soirées mode. Parfois, je me demande comment je passe même la porte de ce genre de soirées.
La communauté créative de New York est assez petite et ça se passe assez naturellement. La plupart du temps, c’est juste un groupe d’amis qui essaient de s’entraider.

ART
- In your drawings and personal artwork, you seem very influenced by death, why so? Dans tes dessins et ton travail artistique personnel, tu sembles fort inspiré par la mort, pourquoi?
Listening to too much metal, lingering teenage angst, working in the back of a tattoo shop full of biker mags and teen angel reference books.
Le fait d’écouter trop de métal, une colère adolescente persistante, travailler dans l’arrière boutique d’un tattoo shop rempli de magazines de bikers et de bouquins faisant référence aux anges adolescents.

- Can you pick your favorite personal piece of work and explain us the story behind ? Peux-tu choisir ton travail personnel préféré et nous raconter son histoire?
I know this is kind of ridiculous, but I made this piece of art for a friend’s birthday.  He’s one of my best bros and he loves weed, bongs, and women. Nough’ said.
C’est un peu ridicule mais j’ai fait cette pièce pour l’anniversaire d’un de mes meilleurs amis. Il aime l’herbe, les bongs et les filles. J’en ai assez dit.

LIFE
- A typical day in Othelo’s life? Une journée type dans ta vie?
During the week, it’s mostly work work work, but living in New York, I often get to go to cool art openings, music shows, and films in the evenings.  That’s the awesome thing about living here, there’s always something to do on any given night. On the nights that I can let loose, I prefer to have my cheap beer of choice at Max Fish, where there’s always someone you know and always a 30% chance of Razo. Usually I end up in 12 other places before I make it to my bed on those nights.  The next morning ain’t so pretty.
Durant la semaine, c’est boulot boulot boulot, mais comme j’habite à New York, je vais souvent à des chouettes vernissages, des concerts et voir des films. C’est la chose la plus géniale quand tu habites ici, c’est qu’il y a toujours quelque chose à faire. Les nuits où je peux me laisser aller, j’aime avoir ma bière pas chère préférée au Max Fish, où il y a toujours quelqu’un que tu connais et 30% de chance de voir Razo. Généralement je passe par 12 autres endroits avant d’arriver dans mon lit ces nuits-là. Le matin suivant n’est pas beau à voir.

- What’s your idea of happiness? Ton idée du bonheur?
Seeing a double full rainbow.
Voir un double arc en ciel.

- What’s the last thing that made you go wow (art, music… )? Quelle est la dernière chose (en art, musique… ) qui t’ait fait faire wow?
Me saying wow happens on a daily basis, maybe even hourly. I’m just easily excited about things that are interesting to me. I have this spot where I buy old magazines and today I found these two little porno mags from the 70′s with the WEIRDEST photo spreads – but obviously taken from an artistic approach. I kind of want to frame them and put them up in my house.
Je dis woah très souvent, chaque jour, peut-être même chaque heure. Je suis juste très facilement emballé par toutes les choses qui peuvent m’intéresser. Il y a cet endroit où j’achète tous ces vieux magazines et aujourd’hui j’ai trouvé ces deux magazines porno des 70’s avec les photos les plus bizarres – mais bien sûr approchés de manière artistique. J’aimerais bien les encadrer et les mettre chez moi.

- Something that means a lot to you? Quelque chose d’important pour toi?
Friends and family… Ozzy the Cat and my button/patch collection.

- What’s coming up next for you? Quels sont tes projets?
Working on a bunch of cool projects at AllDayEveryday, but aside from that I’ve got two little book/zines in the works and a shoe collaboration.
Travailler sur quelques chouettes projets pour AllDayEveryday, mais à côté de ça j’ai aussi deux petits bouquins/zines et une collaboration avec une marque de chaussures en cours.
