Alternative computer reality

I think I’ve lost my husband and a lot of my friends to the World Cup and England won’t even get to the final! I won’t pretend to be a football expert but it seems clear that they will not rise to the occasion. I’ve been told to join in enthusiastically but I’m reluctant to invest too much of my time in a game I don’t understand. I don’t even remember the names of players. Being ¼ French, ¼ English, ¼ Spanish and ¼ Austrian, am I allowed to switch allegiance depending on the country playing? Who should I cheer for?  Thank God I live in London. It’s fairly safe to say that entertainment in this city is not restricted to football. Exciting things to avoid being bored rigid while watching men kick a ball are available day and night. Finding the time to enjoy them all is the challenge!
On Saturday afternoon, I gladly headed to the Dover Street Market sale (purchases: 0) and the White Cube Gallery in Mason’s Yard to see the Antony Gormley installation. The series of sculptural pieces on the ground floor left me completely indifferent but downstairs, Breathing Room III, is a masterpiece. It made a huge impression on me and is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I entered the space and was left wondering whether I was suddenly infiltrating some kind of Tron like alternative computer reality. It’s simply brilliant. So brilliant that I’d go again to experience the anxiety of absolute darkness (you don’t see the floor, the walls or anyone else, it feels like a black hole) followed by the unexpected sight of 15 interconnecting metal frames covered in photo-luminescent paint. It is a stimulating and inspiring visual work you physically test by walking through the intersecting horizontal and vertical beams of light. A fantastic network of metal reminiscent of a massive science fiction architectural form. I loved it. Forget the football and give me a Gormley installation to explore instead!

Je pense avoir perdu mon mari et pas mal d’amis quelque part lors de cette Coupe du Monde, alors que l’Angleterre n’ira même pas en finale. Je ne peux prétendre être experte en matière de football mais il me semble clair qu’ils n’iront pas bien loin. On me dit de me joindre gentiment à l’enthousiasme ambiant mais investir de mon temps dans un jeu que je ne comprends pas me semble stérile. Je peux à peine me souvenir des noms des joueurs. Etant 1/4 française, 1/4 anglaise, 1/4 espagnole et 1/4 autrichienne, suis-je autorisée à changer de favori en fonction du pays qui joue? Pour qui devrais-je m’enthousiasmer? Je remercie le ciel d’habiter Londres car on peut dire sans se tromper que l’amusement dans cette ville ne se limite pas au football. De nouvelles choses excitantes à faire étant disponibles jour et nuit afin d’éviter l’ennui mortel de regarder des hommes courir derrière une balle. Le challenge étant d’arriver à tout faire.
Je suis récemment allée au Dover Street Market et à la White Cube Gallery de Mason’s Yard un samedi après-midi afin de voir l’installation d’Antony Gormley.
La série d’installations sculpturales du rez-de-chaussée me laissa complètement indifférente mais par contre, Breathing Room III est un chef d’oeuvre comme je n’en avais jamais vu auparavant. En entrant dans l’endroit, je me demandai si j’entrais  dans une sorte de Tron, une réalité alternative virtuelle. C’était tellement brillant que j’y retournerais pour expérimenter encore l’anxiété absolue de l’obscurité totale (rien n’étant visible, du sol au mur, tel un trou noir), suivie de la vision inattendue de 15 toiles de métal interconnectées couvertes de peinture luminescente. Il s’agit d’un travail visuel stimulant et inspirant que l’on peut physiquement tester en marchant à travers ces rayons de lumière horizontaux et verticaux. Une fantastique toile de métal qui n’est pas sans faire rappeler une énorme pièce architecturale de science-fiction. J’ai adoré. Oubliez le football, donnez moi une installation de Gormley.
